If you’ve never opened an AI chatbot, this is for you. No setup guides written for engineers. No list of 47 “must-try prompts.” Just enough to get something useful done today.
Pick one tool and open it
You only need one to start. Any of these is fine:
- ChatGPT — chat.openai.com
- Claude — claude.ai
- Gemini — gemini.google.com
Use the free version. Sign in with an email you already have. You do not need a paid plan to learn the basics.
Talk to it like a helpful stranger
Type a normal sentence. You are not programming anything.
Examples that work well on day one:
- “Explain what a password manager is in simple words.”
- “Help me write a short, polite email to reschedule a meeting.”
- “Give me three dinner ideas using chicken, rice, and vegetables.”
If the answer is too long or too technical, say so: “Make that shorter and simpler.” It will try again.
Wolfie’s tip: Treat the first reply as a draft, not a final answer. Ask for a shorter version, a simpler version, or a checklist. That single habit gets you 80% of the value.
One practical task to try right now
Pick something small from your real life:
- Paste a messy paragraph from an email and ask it to clean it up.
- Ask it to turn a long article link (or pasted text) into five bullet points.
- Describe a problem you’re stuck on in plain English and ask for three options.
That’s it. You have used an AI tool for something real.
What not to worry about yet
- You do not need special “prompt engineering.”
- You do not need every tool — one is enough.
- You do not need to understand how the model works inside.
Those topics can wait. First goal: open it, ask for help with one real task, and leave with something useful.
